Reflections at 17 Months
Brennan continues to change at an astonishing rate, and each day he becomes more and more his own person. Months ago I tried desperately to see signs of my son's personality and who he would become; now it is evident every day. So many words describe Brennan. He is smart and curious, funny and playful, determined and persistent, analytical, inquisitive, and a bit silly. I'll be so interested to see how many of these traits hold true for the rest of his life.
Around 16 months Brennan began climbing everything in sight. It turned life upside-down. Everyone asked me when he began walking if life had gotten a lot crazier. Truthfully, it hadn't changed all that much because he had been so mobile even before he let go of things. But climbing? That's a different story. Nothing is safe anymore. Things I used to put out of reach on high tables or countertops can now be reached. Everything that used to be sacred is now fair game. B wants to sit in big chairs, play on our bed, and crawl across tabletops. I definitely have a boy.
Brennan's vocabulary is beginning to expand a bit. When he was about fifteen months old he was not saying much of anything, and it had me slightly concerned. I knew he understood everything I said, but he wasn't repeating any of it or attempting any real words. Now he is saying several words. His current favorite is "uh-oh." He says it all day. When he is in the mood he also says bye-bye (di-dah), mama, dada, Annie (neeeee), more (muh, muh, muh, muh, muh), kitty (key), no, this, that, and Brennan. Today we worked on saying "done" when he signaled that he was done with a meal, and he caught on with "duh, duh, duh." It will be fun to see what words get added to his list in the next months.
It amazes me that Brennan can correctly identify so many of his body parts already. He can accurately find his eyes, nose, mouth, ears, head, hair, fingers, toes, tongue, and teeth. We've quizzed him as a game, but a lot of it he has learned by himself through books and listening to us talk. He is just remarkable.
